Every year Gartner surveys almost 3,000 CIOs to get insights into their strategies as well as digital businesses trends, opportunities and threats. Survey data and its analysis are available in the report “Building the Digital Platform: The 2016 CIO Agenda”, presented at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo and here are some interesting conclusions:
According to Gartner, BI and analytics has once again hit the nº 1 spot for tech priorities in 2016. One might assume that this is due to the push for big data, or most likely is that the traditional concepts behind BI/analytics tools has quite simply not worked over the last 10 years in that the tools have remained difficult to use and therefore the expected take up from business users has not happened.
All too often, I speak to companies who have invested heavily in traditional/legacy BI and analytics tools which have failed the litmus test of user adoption.
So why is this ?
- Traditionally based tools require training, as users have to learn to create these reports, typically with training being frrom 3-10 days dependent on usage and roles;
- Business users do not want to do this training;
- Consequently user adoption becomes low;
In today’s world, people request, access and find information all the time. Even my 82 year old mother can use Google for search, buy good on amazon etc. without any formal training. This has become the norm, but interestingly not in the world of Business Intelligence and Analytics.
This I found odd, until I discovered Wizdee, who have approached the issue from a perspective of Natural Language/Sematic search and analysis.
The technical team have applied the “Google” approach to analytics, ie type your query like: “Show me all the deals committed this quarter by rep”. The query is translated by the engine, which then accesses the various repositories and automatically creates a visualisation of the data (which can be easily adapted based on user preference or behavioural history). If you don’t want to even type you can just speak your request into a device.
At Wizdee we believe that this innovative approach to analytics will really change the way business users adopt BI and analytics. This is a fundamentally new approach rather than a case of same story different logo!
